Symbolism Of An Article On The Reader From A Piece Of...

It has been said that there is meaning behind every miniature detail that the creator of a piece of literature includes in their work. Why would anyone do something if there is no meaning behind it? There is meaning behind everything that anyone does. However, in literature, many of the specific meanings that an author chooses to include in their work is not inherently obvious. For example, a minor detail about the orientation of an object can provide foreshadowing of a later event, the way a character speaks can present background about the character, or the color of an article of clothing can symbolize an idea or a statement. These are all generic examples with very specific meanings that are all made up. The essence of all those†¦show more content†¦Plays are written to be performed. If there is not enough money to fund the entire play, it will be problematic. When a playwright decides to make a shorter play, he or she must accommodate all elements of the play to work with that decision. Character development becomes more difficult to incorporate, exposition must be concise and explicit, and there must be a perfect balance between plot advancement and exposition. In the play Trifles, there is tension between the male characters and the female characters, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters. The male characters believe that they are focusing on the important parts of the investigation of the death of Mr. Wright while the women focus on â€Å"trifles,† or minor details that have little importance. The men laugh at any evidence that the women bring up, although the evidence that the women find is the most compelling evidence of the investigation. For example, when the women discover the quilt that Mrs. Wright was knitting, the men laugh and say the women â€Å"wonder if she was going to quilt it or just knot it!† (Trifles, p. 926). They disregard the quilt of having any importance at all, even though the quilt eventually leads the wome n to an important clue in the murder investigation, a dead bird. Compare the way old age is treated in the poems Essay Example For Students

Compare the way old age is treated in the poems Essay Compare the ways old age is treated in the poems Old man, old man and Warning. Warning is poem by the poet Jenny Joseph. This poem deals with adulthood and old age. The poem defies societys view of old age; this is prefigured in the title of the poem. Similarly, Old man, old man is poem by U A Fanthorpe; this poem explores the changes of adulthood and the changes brought by old age. The theme of the poems is quite different, Old man, old man explores the changing relationship between father and daughter in the past and present and how old age affects their relationship. Contrasting to the theme of Warning which challenges society view of old age and her rebellion against societys expectation of her to settle down and lead a quiet life. Evidently, both poems highlight the outlook of old age. Warning views old age as a time to rejoice and have fun during this time we are to gobble up samples in shops and learn to spit, conflicting with the representation of old age in old man, old man. This narrator tells us that the old man was the connoisseur of nuts but now has become obdurate in his contracted world. Likewise the tone of two poems are drastically different as the tone of Old man, old man is presented in two eras, past and present, in the past the poem deals with, grief due to the failed relationship between father and daughter. Similarly, in the present the tone is quite similar due to the sadness, the daughter interprets from her father in his helpless situation. Consequently, this differs in Warning as the tone is very much rebellious as the narrator tries to assert her rights in life while she is an old woman. The tone of warning is also full of excitement at the vision of experiencing the freedom of old age and the loss of any responsibility that enables us to become youths once again. Jenny Joseph creates this impact by making her character sound rebellious and assertive with the use of strong forceful language such When I am old, I will The character of the poem conveys that the old woman will do as she intends to and will be insubordinate. The frequent use of and as well as the childish language reflects the fact that the poet views old age as a chance to lose responsibility and blame any of lifes problems on old age. The poem deals with the inner feelings of the character that believes that when she is old she will be an opposite to the stereotypical versions of old women. She declares this by saying that she will learn to spit. However, Old man, old man, a poem by U A Fanthorpe explores the changing relationship between a daughter (the narrator) and father. The poem is a story of a man portrayed through his memories of what he was like through his world. The poem can be broken into two definitions; firstly, it is described in both the past and future tense of the mans life. In the past tense of he poem the old man is referred to as a man of authority, world authority and connoisseur of nut and bolts. In the past, the old man is also referred to as a man who did it himself. Where as in the present the old man is described as weak and facile, this contrasts to his independence and turgidity, as he is now frail and dependent. .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 , .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .postImageUrl , .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 , .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27:hover , .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27:visited , .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27:active { border:0!important; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27:active , .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27 .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4e0d94b935085a5fb692a29555659a27:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetry Analysis A Poison Tree EssayHe is ashamed to admit defeat to old age so he keeps to himself not asking for help. He is portrayed as a man who has lost control of his freedom he once had, as he became self-demoted in his nineties to washing up and now is weak. The small things such as losing a hammer distress him to frustration of his old agedness. The narrator, who the reader assumes is the old mans daughter, wants to help him and let him rely on her. Nevertheless, as he is stubborn and unwilling he does not allow her in. The ego of the old man is shutting out the narrator. The narrator loves the old man and his helplessness and wants to help him. Willingly the narrator wants to walk the old man to Drury Lane and find his hammer. The narrator is attempting to help him with little things and is willing to be invisible but be there for him. The old man conspicuously hides his emotions and feelings away from his daughter. The narrator pleads to help the old man and reassures him she will only be a cloud. Contrasting, the character of Jenny Josephs poem is looking forward to becoming old she makes it eloquent that she will be asserting her rights and desires as an old woman. The woman intends on breaking the stereotypical outlook of old people; she stresses her point that she will be independent and a shocking old woman. The old woman observes old age as a time for becoming free and having no responsibility, as she says that she will, go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other peoples gardens. The poem also sounds amusing and makes you want to smile but is also is provoking the inner thoughts and feelings of the old woman who believes society has striped her of her individuality and opportunity to express herself. The style of Warning and Old man, old man contrast slightly between the three tenses of the past, present and future. In Old man, old man, the words and adjectives are conveyed through authority are associated mainly with the man in his past unlike his weaknesses which are associated with the man in his present. In the past of the old man, he is recognized as the lifelong adjuster and has world authority. Phrases associated with the mans weakness located in the present, as now his life is shambles among clues. The contrast between the past and present represent the changes the old man has undergone. Stanza three of Warning relates to the womans adulthood, now (in the present) she must conform and behave in a responsible and reliable fashion. In comparison to Warning, Old man, old man uses irregular line length the enjambment of sentences mirrors the shambles and disorder of the old mans life enlightening the reader of the old mans troubles. The tone in stanzas one and two of Old man, old man have a sad tone as they look at the changes in the old man and his life. The old man was an expert in DIY, he was a handyman. The tone of stanza one and two change into a more pleasant tone whereas in stanza three and four as they are praising the man of his independence. Additionally, stanza nine and ten turn to a more personal aspect as it focuses on the daughter and her feelings with her father, as the old man is independent and wants to stay independent. Stanza eleven completes and sums up the whole poem and rounds up the daughters feeling. In Warning, the poem has a comical and mocking tone. In stanza one, the tone is rebellious, humorous, and surprising. The tone has a sense of excitement as the old woman is awaiting the future prospect of experiencing freedom of old age and the independence. Jenny Joseph talks about how people view wear terrible shirts and eat thee pounds of sausages at a go a terrible lifestyle. Stanza three has a unique tone, which differs to stanza one and two. .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee , .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .postImageUrl , .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee , .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee:hover , .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee:visited , .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee:active { border:0!important; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee:active , .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6f8b3d9ec689e64cc18ccaf3879cdfee:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: West Indian Poetry Analysis EssayIt has a more mature response from the woman speaking. The theme of Warning is a look toward adulthood and old age. The challenge of overcoming societys stereotypical view of old people and rebellion to against societys expectations of old people. The poem is amusing and merges humour, bitterness and frustration. The theme portrayed from Old man, old man are the changes brought by old age between a father and daughter conveyed through Fanthorpes use of oppositions. The is also based on the difficulty of one trying to adapt to the results and outcomes of old age and being able to have shame to rely on someone to help you to re-enact your usual day. By comparing both poems personally, my outcome is that I considerably prefer Warning by Jenny Joseph because this poem is very humorous and does not give in to stereotypes. The poem is rebellious and does have key moments of fun and naivety as it compare societys view of a stereotypical old women to a personal opinion that some people do not enjoy being inflicted with rules of responsibility throughout life. When reading Old man, old man I concluded that poem was dealing more with emotions of old age than with the physical attributes of being old. For example Warning dealt personal opinions on how to be like when you are old, whereas Old man, old man deals with the struggles of being old and dependant. Old man, old man is a very heart warming poem of a man struggling to overcome old age by himself but then his daughter realises this and wants to help him overcome his struggle but only be a cloud.

The Federalist Papers And Federalism Essay Example For Students

The Federalist Papers And Federalism Essay The Federalist Papers And Federalism Essay The Federalist Papers were mostly the product of two young men: Alexander Hamilton of New York, age 32, and James Madison of Virginia, age 36. Both men sometimes wrote four papers in a single week. An older scholar, John Jay, later named as first chief justice of the Supreme Court, wrote five of the papers. Hamilton, who had been an aide to Washington during the Revolution, asked Madison and Jay to help him in this project. Their purpose was to persuade the New York convention to ratify the just-drafted Constitution. In the letters they would explain and defend the Constitution. Hamilton started the idea and outlined the sequence of topics to be discussed, and addressed most of them in fifty-one of the letters. Madisons Twenty-nine letters have proved to be the most memorable in their balance and ideas of governmental power. It is not clear whether The Federalist Papers, written between October 1787 and May 1788 had any effect on New Yorks and Virginias ratification of the Constitution. Encyclopedia Britannica defines Federalism as, ;A mode of political organization that unites independent states within a larger political framework while still allowing each state to maintain its own political integrity (712). Having just won a revolution against an oppressive monarchy, the American colonists were in willing to replace it with another monarchy style of government. On the other hand, their experience with the disorganization under the Articles of Confederation, due to unfair competition between the individual states, made them a little more receptive to an increase in national powers. A number of Federalist Papers argued that a new kind of balance, never achieved elsewhere was possible. The Papers were themselves a balance or compromise between the nationalist ideas of Hamilton, who wrote more for the commercial interests of New York, and the uneasiness of Madison, who shared the skepticism of distant authority widely held by Virginia farmers. In American Government and Politics Today, Madison proposed that, instead of the absolute sovereignty of each state under the Articles of Confederation. The states would retain a residual sovereignty in all areas which did not require national concern. The very process of ratification of the Constitution, he argued, symbolized the concept of federalism (77). He said: This assent and ratification is to be given by the people, not as individuals composing one entire nation, but as composing the distinct and individual States to which they respectively belong The act, therefore, establishing the Constitution, will not be a national but a federal act (qtd in American 85). The Federalist Papers also provide the first specific mention we have of the idea of checks and balances as a way of restricting governmental power and preventing its abuse. Both Hamilton and Madison regarded this as the most powerful form of government. As conceived, popularly elected House of Representatives would be checked and balanced by a more conservative Senate picked by state legislatures. (in 1913 the 17th Amendment changed this to the popular election of senators). Hamilton observed in letter number 78 that, A democratic assembly is to be checked by a democratic senate and both these by a democratic chief magistrate (318). In what many historians agree is his most brilliant essay, number 78. Hamilton defended the Supreme Courts right to rule upon the constitutionality of laws passed by national or state legislatures. This historically crucial power of judicial review, he argued, was an appropriate check on the legislature, ;The pestilential breath of faction may poison the fountains of justice; (317). Hamilton rejected the British system of allowing the Parliament to override by majority vote any court decision it finds to its dislike. ;The courts of justice are to be considered the bulwarks of a limited Constitution against legislative encroachments; (318). Only the difficult process of amending the Constitution or the gradual transformation of its members to another viewpoint, could reverse the Supreme Courts interpretation of that document. In the most original of The Federalist Papers, Number 10. Madison addressed this double challenge. .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 , .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .postImageUrl , .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 , .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44:hover , .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44:visited , .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44:active { border:0!important; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44:active , .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44 .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u60eb181a68d7d9f1d981ae3e73cfdc44:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Social Justice Billy Budd Essay His main concern was the need, To break and control the violence of faction (36). The Twin Sisters By: Venus is known as Earth’s sister planet because they are similar in mass, sizes density, and volume. But have you ever wondered how they are different. Venus is actually very different from Earth in many ways. Venus is closer to the sun than any other planet except Mercury. Venus’s distance from the sun is about 67.2 million miles, compared with about 93 million miles from the Earth. Venus orbits the sun in a circular motion. The Earth and all other planets orbit the sun in an oval shaped motion. Venus takes about 225 Earth days to go around the sun once compared to earth’s 365 days. Unlike Earth, Venus does not rotate in the same direction in which it travels around the sun. Rather, Venus rotates in the opposite direction and spins around once every 243 Earth days. Venus can be see going through changes in shape and size. These changes are called phases much like the moons. Earth does not go through phases such as those of Venus. Earth and Venus do have some similarities when it comes to the their surfaces features. Both planets have mountains, valleys, and canyons. Venus’s surface is still very different from Earth’s surface. For example, Venus has crowns, ring like structures that range from 95 to 360 miles in diameter. These crowns form when hot material inside the planet rises to the surface. Earth has huge bodies of water and land, compared to Venus’s extremely dry planet. Venus has do lakes, oceans, or any bodies of water because the temperatures are to hot. If it did have water it would boil and evaporate, thus still leaving not water on the dry planet. The atmospheric pressure of Venus is estimated at 1,323 pounds per square inch, which is about 90 times greater than the atmospheric pressure on Earth, which is about 14.7 pounds per square inch. Such difference in atmospheric pressure is due to the fact that Venus’s atmosphere is made up primarily of carbon dioxide...
